These results clearly illustrate the association of enzootic skunk rabies with historic dog rabies enzootics (Figure 1).
Most western states likewise report few rabid animals, other than California (where skunk rabies is moderately common, except in mountainous and southern regions) and Arizona (where both skunk and fox rabies occur, especially in the south).
Several studies have also described the behavior of skunk rabies epizootics in western North America (19 21), Texas (22), and Canada (23).
The objectives of this study were to describe the epizootiology of skunk rabies in the eastern United States, determine if skunk and raccoon rabies epizootics are associated spatially and temporally, and introduce methods to assess evidence of spillover of rabies front raccoons to skunks compared with independent cycling of the virus within the skunk population.
These positive cases appear to occur as a result of spillover infection with skunk rabies, a variant of the virus that differs from the current raccoon rabies epizootic on the eastern seaboard.
