Additional corneal signs including pseudogerontoxon, shield ulcer
and punctate epithelial keratitis were noted.
VKC may be further complicated by development of corneal scar, shield ulcers
, microbial keratitis, limbal stem cell deficiencies, and complications related to corticosteroid treatment such as cataract and glaucoma .
Ocular diseases requiring lid fusion included, infective corneal ulcer/abscess in 21 (65.6%) cases, shield ulcer
in vernal keratoconjunctivitis in 3 (9.4 %)cases, facial palsy in 2 (6.2%) cases, alkali burns in 2 (6.2 %)case, neurotrophic ulcer in 2 (6.2 %)cases, Mooren ulcer in 1 (3.1%) case, Grave's disease in 1 (3.1%) case (Table).
Limbal pannus and Horner-Trantas dots healed in all patients but large papillae resolved in only 20 (77%) patients of the group while active shield ulcer
in 18 (69%) patients.
CONCLUSIONS: Conventional methods of treatment may not be effective in patients with giant papillae/corneal shield ulcer
. With 0.1% Fluorometholone eye drops rural patients showed poor compliance because of long term therapy.
(11) The mucoid plaque overlying the shield ulcer
has been shown to contain eosinophils and their granules.
Corneal ulcers, known as shield ulcers
, may also be seen in chronic allergic ocular conditions such as vernal kerato- conjunctivitis.
