In this randomized study, 101 patients were assigned to undergo retrograde catheterization of stenotic aorric valves and 51 patients had catheterization without passage through stenotic aortic valves; 32 angiography patients without aortic stenosis served as controls.
Of those who underwent retrograde catheterization of stenotic aortic valves, 22 of 101 (22%) developed a total of 30 cerebral emboli; 3 patients had acute neurologic deficits.
