Evidence for a monoamine mediated, opioid-independent, antihyperalgesic effect of venlafaxine, a nontricyclic
antidepressant, in a neurogenic pain model in rats.
Venlafaxine (Effexor) is a nontricyclic
antidepressant with dual serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibition with weak reuptake inhibition of dopamine (Gumnick & Nemeroff, 2000) that has demonstrated efficacy in treating depression, as well as producing fewer side effects than tricyclics (Table 1).
antidepressants: Current trends in children and adolescents.
To assist mental health counselors as consultants to school counselors and to provide them with accessible information for consultation purposes when working with parents or other school or medical personnel, we offer the following information on this vital topic, beginning with a description of how stimulants, tricyclic antidepressants, and nontricyclic

Among the nontricyclic
antidepressants, only duloxetine has been approved by the US FDA for neuropathic pain, specifically peripheral diabetic neuropathy.
However, it is surprising that 297 respondents (73%) with cataplexy reporting mild to severe ADL interference, were not on tricyclic antidepressant medication (114 respondents reported mild interference, 107 reported moderate interference and 76 reported severe interference in this nontricyclic
antidepressant medicated group).
