Marasmic SAM patients who were discharged remained on treatment for longer periods compared with those who were classified as having kwashiorkor or marasmic kwashiorkor. Patients without or with mild oedema (+)stayed a little longer than those with moderate (++) and severe oedema (+++), but there were no notable statistically significant differences in respect of dermatosis grade.
He said the fact people had required treatment for severe malnutrition cases such as marasmic kwashiorkor was "disgraceful" and added: "People do not understand and do not recognise that there are millions of people really struggling.
The rate of detection of total aflatoxin was highest in marasmic kwashiorkor and kwashiorkor patients, lower in children with marasmus and lowest in controls (table 2, Figure 1).
Objectives: To determine the levels and possible role of pro-inflammatory cytokines TNFa, IL-1 and IL-6 in children with clinical protein energy malnutrition (kwashiorkor, marasmic kwashiorkor or marasmus) alone and in combination with malaria in Western Kenya.
According to the Wellcome Trust classification of protein energy malnutrition, 77 patients (60.1%) were of normal weight for age, 40 (31.2%) were underweight for age, 4 (3.1%) had kwashiorkor, 5 (3.9%) were marasmic and 2 (1.6%) had marasmic kwashiorkor.
