A dye injection study showed that the anterior QL block consistently dyed lumbar nerve roots and sometimes nerves within the TAP.

Some of them include herpes zoster, infection, lumbar nerve root tumor, spinal instability, excessive hypertrophy of the facet joint, ankylosing spondylitis, sacroiliitis, sciatic neuritis, piriformis syndrome, intrapelvic mass (hypertrophic ossification), intraspinal ganglion cyst, endometriosis, adenomyosis, coxarthrosis, et cetera.

Sciatica is a common disease caused by intraspinal or extraspinal pathologic processes along the lumbar nerve roots and sciatic nerve (1).

This may be justified by the longer distance lumbar nerve roots having to travel before reaching the intervertebral foramen, when compared to cervical or thoracic roots [6].

However, Ozkan et al (22) reported that in cadavers injected at the [T.sub.10] level, it was observed that the dye did not spread caudally to the [T.sub.12] level to stain the [L.sub.1] lumbar nerve segment, whereas in cadavers injected with an additional 5 ml dye injection at [L.sub.1] level, it was observed that the genitofemoral, ilioinguinal, iliohypogastric and lateral femoral cutaneous nerves were stained with dye.
