Sufficient evidence exists to recommend that perceptions of benefits and barriers, and access to facilities and programs for exercise should be addressed in exercise promotion
counseling and exercise programs for pre-adolescents and adolescents, especially for females whose duration and intensity of exercise, by and large, tends to be low.
But while Medicare will pay for angiograms and bypass surgery, it won't pay for blood pressure or cholesterol screenings, nutritional counseling, smoking cessation programs, exercise promotion
, or even for drugs that lower high blood pressure and high blood cholesterol--the very measures that might keep people from needing angiograms and bypass surgery.
Outlined in Table 1 are example methodologies for a hypothetical exercise promotion
intervention designed to effect change in common mediating variables for popular behavioral theories.
