National Milk Records data just published show the rate of increase in butterfat levels in our dairy herds has been greater over the past three months than in the same period in any other year on record, causing concern over the butterfat trigger for the 2003/04 quota year.
Based on milk records from 800,000 cows, butterfat percent has increased this year from 3.77pc in September to 4.12pc in November.
"If butterfat levels continue to increase at this rate, there is a real possibility that the butterfat trigger could be activated in this year," says NMR director Frank Armitage.
"Exceeding the butterfat quota has financial implications, so some planning is needed now.
