It was first considered to be a running bird; later it was suggested that it was a highly modified galliform, a giant megapode, or a scrubfowl, thanks to the discovery of large earth tumuli (megapodes built large earth mounds to breed), up to 131 ft (40 m) in diameter, that were first studied by archaeologists unsuccessfully seeking human burials.
