A few decades ago, the northeastern portion of the island was home to more than 20,000 of the red apes
. Now, only about 5,000 remain, a team of researchers says.
Rosemary, 21, from Alnwick, is spending two months at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, near Sandakan, in Borneo, helping the 37 staff care for orphaned and injured red apes
in their natural environment.

Before the construction of the Realm of the Red Ape (RORA) exhibit began, evaluation was conducted in the Orangutan Breeding Centre (OBC), which was built in 1969 and was very much a second-generation exhibit, more functional than aesthetic.
As this was a multi-million pound exhibit, it was seen as important to test the prior knowledge and understanding of the proposed design theme "Life in the Canopy," the educational theme "Kinship." and the proposed branding of the exhibit "Realm of the Red Ape." This was done in two ways.
