They put in a ommaya reservoir
(a brain catheter) to allow drainage of any fluid build-up.
Some patients have improved or stabilized after one or several 6-week treatments with intraventricular INTERFERON-[alpha] through an Ommaya reservoir
, starting at 10 U/[m.sup.2] body surface area per day, with daily increments, up to 106 U/m per day on the fifth day, 5 days per week, combined with oral ISOPRINOSINE 100 mg/kg per day (13,14,15).
In the case of ventricular catheter dysfunction or reservoir absence, the Ommaya reservoir
was inserted in 5 patients with acute hydrocephalus due to V-P drainage failure to enable emergency cerebrospinal fluid tapping.
Some examples profiled in the journal include the introduction of microscopes into the operating room for neurosurgical procedures (Taylor, 1971); intracranial pressure monitoring (Hendrickson, 1987; Mitchell, 1986); administration of epidural morphine in lumbar surgery patients (Ozuna & Snyder, 1987); administration of intraventricular morphine via an Ommaya reservoir
(Raney & Kirk, 1988); and carotid endarterectomy (Leonard, 1996).
