We found dozens of "firms" purporting to sell pentobarbital, known by brand name Nembutal, in different forms.
For all surgical procedures, the mice were anesthetized by intraperitoneal injection of 50mg/kg Nembutal (Abbott Laboratories, North Chicago, IL, USA) diluted in 0.9% sodium chloride solution.
Additional management strategies include hyperventilation, opiate medication administration, and deep sedation via propofol (Diprivan) or pentobarbital (Nembutal).
After 3 hours, the bowel segment was removed for further in vitro analysis and the animals were euthanized by anesthetic overdose (200 mg/kg nembutal, ip).
After the behavioral testing, the animals were perfused with 0.9% saline under anesthesia with 0.4% Nembutal. The brains were immediately collected and then postfixed with 4% paraformaldehyde in 0.1 M phosphate buffer.
The rats were anesthetized with Nembutal (30 mg/kg) at the end of each experimental schedule, perfused intracardially with 0.01 M phosphate-buffered saline (PBS, pH 7.4), and fixed in PLP fixative (0.01 M sodium metaperiodate; 0.075 M L-lysine-HCl; 2% paraformaldehyde, 0.03 M PB, pH 6.2).
Thirty Sprague-Dawley rats of equal gender weighing about 350 g were deep anesthetized with intraperitoneal pentobarbital (Nembutal; Sanofi Sante Animale, Brussels, Belgium) at a dose of 50 mg/kg and divided into five groups (n = 6 each) as seen with the study design (Figure 2).
The animals were anesthetized with sodium pentobarbital (Nembutal, 40 mg/kg, i.p.) and perfused with a 0.05 M phosphate-buffered saline solution, pH 7.4 (1 mL/g) followed by a 3.0 % glutaraldehyde solution in 0.07 M cacodylate buffer, pH 7.2 (1.5 mL/g) through the left ventricule, using a perfusion pump (Aga 2 intel pump).
"Exit" is an international organization working to legalize assisted suicide and to "promote methods of committing suicide." Nembutal is a legal barbiturate that Philip Nitschke has promoted since the late 1990's as "a peaceful way to die."
At the end of the experimentation, animals were subjected to overnight fasting and consequently anesthetized with Nembutal (45 mg/kg) intraperitoneally.
