The whitemouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri) is widely distributed off the western coast of the Atlantic Ocean, from the Yucatan Peninsula (25[degrees]N) in Mexico to the Gulf of San Matias (41[degrees]S) in Argentina (Chao, 1981; Cousseau & Perrota, 1998).
Four species of teleost fishes were captured: Atlantic croaker (Micropogonias undulatus: control (C) = 3, procedural control (PC) = 2, magnet (M) = 1), oyster toadfish (Opsanus tau: C = 1, PC = 2, M = 2), black sea bass (Centropristis striata: C=0, PC=0, M=1), and the bluefish (Pomatomus saltatrix: C = 2, PC = 1, M = 1).
Other taxa that represented over 1% of the overall catch included Cynoscion arenarius (7.5%), Chloroscombrus chrysurus (5.4%), Micropogonias undulatus (4.4%), Brevoortia patronus (3.8%), unidentified Gobiidae (3.6%), unidentified Sciaenidae (2.8%), unidentified Ophidiidae (2.5%), Symphurus spp.

Abstract--Using data collected simultaneously from a trawl and a hydrophone, we found that temporal and spatial trends in densities of juvenile Atlantic croaker (Micropogonias undulatus) in the Neuse River estuary in North Carolina can be identified by monitoring their sound production.
