In 1797, George Warner, a sailmaker in New York, spoke for all the "tradesmen, mechanics, and the industrious classes of society" who for too long had considered "themselves of TOO LITTLE CONSEQUENCE to the body politic." In the early 1790s, these sorts of men organized themselves in mechanics associations and Democratic-Republican societies, and eventually they came to make up the body and soul of the northern part of the Jeffersonian Republican party.
