Billy Budd was adapted from Herman Melville's story by E M Forster and Eric Crozier and is set aboard the HMS Indomitable in 1797 during the wars against the French.
She was originally to have been named HMS Indomitable but a public campaign after the scrapping of the previous Ark Royal in 1980 led the Navy to announce the name would be revived.
"We eventually got to Colombo, Ceylon and picked up our transport home, HMS Indomitable from Sydney Australia, full of ex-Japanese prisoners of war, just like skeletons poor souls."
The Barrow winger scored 25 tries on that tour of Australasia - nicknamed after the vessel on which they sailed, HMS Indomitable - despite not making the Test team.
