The District Commissioner at Gaberones reported in July 1941 that 'the Batlokwa have thought better of their refusal to join the Bechuanaland Protectorate African Auxiliary Pioneer Corps'.(52) A tradition of free migration between Bechuanaland and South Africa largely accounts for the failure of the chiefs in the tiny south eastern reserves to get their men to join the army.
