The ranges for glucose measures were as follows: 35 to 291 mg/dl (FSBG), 82 to 397 mg/dl (venous bedside), and 91 to 484 mg/dl (venous laboratory).
The actual values of the FSBG were also compared to the acceptable range of 20% of the laboratory glucose.
This pilot study found no difference in the mean glucose values of samples obtained by the FSBG method, venous samples analyzed on the bedside meter, and venous samples analyzed in the hospital laboratory.
Nurses using FSBG should be cognizant of the potential inaccuracy of glucose measurements in comparisons to laboratory values.
Nurses should determine which patients are appropriate for FSBG determinations.
