Catamenial pneumothorax (CP) is a rare and complex clinical condition caused by endometrial tissues, commonly found in reproductive women (age 15-49 years).Its diagnosis is often delayed or overlooked by clinicians, which may result in recurrent hospitalizations and other complications.
A less commonly occurring primary spontaneous pneumothorax, a catamenial pneumothorax, is a syndrome of recurrent pneumothorax occurring within 48 to 72 hours of onset of menses (Carter & Ettonsohn, 1990).
Secondary spontaneous pneumothorax (SSP) occurs in older people with underlying pulmonary diseases, such as emphysema, asthma, acute or chronic infections, lung cancer, congenital diseases, catamenial pneumothorax, lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM).5-7 Traumatic pneumothorax is divided into three groups as blunt, penetrating, and iatrogenic pneumothorax.8
TE has symptoms and findings emerging as catamenial pneumothorax, haemothorax, haemopneumothorax, haemoptysis, and pulmonary nodules.2
Pathological assessment of tissues revealed nonspecific findings in 30 (76.9%) patients, multiple bullae in 5 (12.8%), ruptured hydatid cyst in 2 (5.1%), histiocytosis X in 1 (2.6%) and catamenial pneumothorax in 1 (2.6%) patient.
