Heparinized whole blood was obtained from healthy volunteers (n = 10) and clinically stable kidney transplant recipients with excellent graft function who received an immunosuppressive therapy including CsA (CsA dosed to reach trough concentrations of 150-200 [micro]g/L), methylprednisolone alone (12-20 mg/day), and azothioprine (2 mg/kg of body weight per day) 14 days after transplantation (n = 8; local transplantation center at the University of Lubeck Medical School) at the same time of day before additional immediate processing.
We cannot exclude the alternative possibility that CsA concentrations are covariant with some other therapeutic intervention, because most subjects receive multiple immunosuppressants, such as prednisone or azothioprine, which could also affect Hcy metabolism.
