Other potential off-label treatments for facial erythema of rosacea include vascular lasers, oral beta-blockers or
alpha-agonists, and even botulinum toxin.
If a patient feels strongly about continuing medical marijuana use, and you feel that their marijuana use is not clinically harmful and that psychiatric symptoms require treatment, consider medications without a known potential for abuse (eg, antidepressants, buspirone, or hydroxyzine for anxiety;
alpha-agonists or atomoxetine for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, etc.).
Only 2% of those without a sleep diagnosis took
alpha-agonists, but 13% took melatonin and 15% took any medication.
Over-the-counter antihistamines are the most commonly utilized medications in all age groups and
alpha-agonists are the most frequently prescribed sleep medications.
In fact, sometimes the use of topical
alpha-agonists make them appear more visible as the background erythema that helps to disguise them fades away.
