Chandra grating spectromers, combined with earlier XMM-Newton and Chandra observations, gave a 4[sigma] detection of the OVII K[alpha] absorption line in the spectrum of a background blazer (a bright nonthermal source thought to be powered by accretion onto a supermassive black hole) at redshift z = 0.165 behind the SculpterWall, a large superstructure of galaxies at z = 0.03 [11].
where [[alpha].sub.i,j] = [A.sub.CUT.j]/[A.sub.ref,i] and [[beta].sub.i,j] = ([MATHEMATICAL EXPRESSION NOT REPRODUCIBLE IN ASCII]) * ([p.sub.CUT,j]/[p.sub.ref,i]), and to the premise that the same spectral feature, that is, the same molecular absorption line of the strength S, was probed in both cells.
The main CO absorption lines are present within the spectral range of 4,5 [micro]m - 5,5 [micro]m.
27 PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS, they present data suggesting that the spacings between absorption lines for several types of atoms 8 to 12 billion years ago were different than they are today.
During absorption measurements, the AOTF increases the signal-to-noise ratio by restricting radiation from the atmosphere to a narrow spectral range of approximately 10 |cm.sup.-1~ around the absorption line. The AOTF is operated from 3.5 to 14 |micro|meter~~ during emission measurements.
When the researchers simulated the Hitomi spectrum by adding this absorption line to the hot gas' emission line seen with Chandra and XMM-Newton, they found no evidence in the summed spectrum for either absorption or emission of X-rays at 3.5 keV, consistent with the Hitomi observations.
First discovered in 1922, these absorption lines (more than 400 of them) are seen any time astronomers look toward dust-reddened stars.
At the time of writing, no correction has been applied yet for Balmer absorption lines. Long slit spectra obtained along the galactic radius are going to be used to correct for the impact of the absorption on H[beta] and H[alpha] lines.
By comparing the positions of the absorption lines measured by the telescope with the positions measured in the laboratory, they can tell whether alpha is different near the white dwarf.
The gas samples contained water vapor as impurities and the unblended water absorption lines recorded in the 1607-1831 [cm.sup.-1] region along with the standard water wavenumber values taken from Guelachvili and Rao [26] were used to calibrate the transmittance spectrum.
The portable remote detection system integrates PAS and open-field acoustic resonator techniques to detect chemicals and explosives, inspect absorption lines, and measure absorption intensities.
Evolution of galaxies and the intergalactic matter can be studied by looking at quasar absorption lines. Light from a background quasar interacts with the intervening medium which leaves a characteristic signature in the quasar spectrum depending upon the physical properties of the absorber.
The unit is a single-mode optical-fiber-coupled absorption cell containing carbon monoxide [[blank].sup.12][C.sup.16]O gas, which has many absorption lines in t his region.
This data can be displayed through absorption lines and by the relative strength shown, the D/H line can be evaluated.
In the course of observing quasars, astronomers have discovered clouds of hydrogen gas that make their presence known by absorbing some of the quasar's radiation, creating a thicket of absorption lines. Recent studies with the Keck telescope have revealed that even the most distant hydrogen clouds-those that date from the early universe-also contain heavier elements, including carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen, in an abundance roughly one-hundredth that of the sun's.
