Catanduanes is known to produce the finest grade of
abaca hemp, which is one of its top industries.
Among these is the 'dagmay,' an intricately woven cloth made from fine
abaca hemp and the dreams of Mandaya women knitting it.
A young T'boli boy is visited in his dreams by Fudalu, the spirit of the
abaca hemp, who appears only to the females of the tribe and bestows upon them the exclusive talent and creativity in weaving the tribe's sacred cloth.
The 89-year-old Dulay was given the National Artist for Culture award in 1997 for her world-renowned "t'nalak" loom weaving, a T'boli way of weaving
abaca hemp into complicated cloth designs using tree dyes.
