As additional proof the idea of a .45 ACP
revolver was a good one, note the fact Colt kept the caliber as an option until New Service production ceased in 1944.

ammo performed well, definitely within the self-defense standard of 4.25 Inches at 25 yards.
Iver Johnson's Eagle XLC is an 8-capacity pistol in 10mm and .45 ACP
