Optimal feed speed is determined by a number of variables including finish required, depth and width of cut, type of material being cut, length of production run or capacity of the moulder.
Direct-drive-type moulder spindles can use cutterhead jointers and/or high-frequency drives to increase the feed speed.
If the moulder is running at 35 fpm, the production will be 8,400 lineal feet per shift.
Jointed moulders are generally regarded as a popular choice for companies looking for a moulder with high feed speeds.
These moulders are used by companies like Georgia-Pacific and flooring companies who need a full profiling machine which can produce up to 35,000 feet of moulding in a seven-hour shift," said Tim Sermonet, moulder sales engineer with SCMI.
In addition to having a well-trained staff in the moulding/toolroom departments, an operation cannot be productive and profitable if its moulder is not running.
Basically, "said Morris, "we went to them with a totally new moulder and tooling concept and said, 'Here's the machine we think will work for you.
We've sold machines to everyone from the little mom-and-pop operations, where investing in a Weinig moulder has led directly to their success, to the billion-dollar-a-year companies like Andersen Windows, where they started with one of our machines for a special application and now have 36.
And the Weinig technicians did an excellent job of training our personnel in the proper moulder use and operation.
We find that most of our non-CNC customers are people with older machines that have worn out, first-time moulder buyers, and companies interested in adding moulders to produce value-added mouldings," said Stan Paszkowski, product manager for moulders with SCMI.
With basic maintenance training, a non-CNC moulder operator can call in for a part and often have it delivered in 24 hours.
Stefani Group America offers the Gabbiani-GDG GS 170 moulder with digital numeric control.
The moulder features quick knife changeover and versatility with all kinds of wood, the company says.
According to the study, a company that has planned well, is organized and is using a modern moulder system can expect to get a 60 percent productivity on a run of 500 linear feet up to 90 percent productivity on runs of 10,000 linear feet.
Put another way, on average a moulder can produce 40 linear feet a minute, so for every hour a moulder sits idle, approximately 2,400 linear feet is not being produced, according to Owen McGee, regional sales manager for Wadkin.
