CIN I (mild dysplasia) and CIN II (moderate dysplasia) lesions show relatively low levels of E6 and E7 expression in which the viral genomes replicate episomally, whereas CIN III (severe dysplasia, carcinoma in situ) and invasive cancer lesions often display high-level expression of E6 and E7, in most cases with the integration of viral DNA into the host cell genome (29).
