In theory, percutaneous drainage converts an intra-abdominal abscess (which is a contraindication to anti-TNF therapy) into an enterocutaneous fistula
(which is an indication for anti-TNF therapy).

CNS stomal therapy nurse from Palmerston North, Lawrence Mutale, presented a case study on managing a patient with a recessed ileostomy and an overactive enterocutaneous fistula
It can also be used as a short-term treatment for reducing the number of draining enterocutaneous fistulas
