Castle Woods and the castle itself were earlier sold to a company in Buckinghamshire, which was expected to clear-fell
the ancient broadleaf woodlands and plant conifers.
This led Glaubitz to the conclusion that clear-fell
harvesting is not reducing genetic diversity in the silvertop ash of the south-east forests.
The Commission wanted to clear-fell
an area of conifers on its land but, because a fence had disappeared, ended up clear-felling a neighbouring landowner's plantation instead.
This means that clear-fell will always have its place as a system of forest management.
Clear-felling will have to continue in the majority of upland forests whose timber yields supply Wales and UK wood and paper industries, but continuous cover forests also supply key quantities of timber and together with clear-fell create visually attractive forests providing open views and appreciated landscapes.
