One is struck by Gautier's virtuosity in recreating Hugo's imaginative world: there is a particularly remarkable and lengthy appreciation of Les Burgraves (originally spread over two feuilletons), more evocative, it might be argued, than the play itself; elsewhere, he perceptively captures the fantastical and often bizarre nature of Hugo's drawings and transformations of coffee stains and ink blots.
His own plays, historical melodramas filled with rather wooden, typically romantic personages, include Hernani (1830), Ruy Blas (1838), and Les Burgraves (1843).
However, even in the manuscript of Baudelaire's play, L'Ideolus (abandoned in 1843, purportedly because of Hugo's failure with Les Burgraves, and whose hero is a sculptor, as it turned out), one also discovers variants that clearly indicate the poet's awareness of the possible sculptural manipulation of letters, specifically, the upper-case Y.
