One of the earliest photographs of Tolstoy, taken in 1856 with the other contributors to the journal The Contemporary, shows the nabobs of Russian literature like Goncharov, Ostrovsky and Turgenev, nattily dressed and loafing like Bohemians on upholstered chairs; behind them stands Tolstoy, Leo the lion, arms crossed, in his army dress uniform, glowering and uncomfortable, clearly ready to burst out of the salon.
