Intensive sampling was conducted on randomly selected plants growing inside and outside of associations with N-fixing plants in a shrub-heath portion of the site where saplings of Pinus rigida and patches of the clonal shrub Myrica pensylvanica and the perennial legume Baptisia tinctoria were abundant and were intermixed near the edge of an aggrading forest.
However, symbiotic fixation of nitrogen is likely in Tephrosia because the total N content in Tephrosia tissue was significantly higher (Table 3) than in the other plants, including the known N-fixing species Myrica pensylvanica.

Collins and Quinn (1982) found reduced Andropogon scoparius seedling growth when grown in pots with Myrica pensylvanica.
