These improvements must be introduced at lower costs and in shorter time frames than it has taken historically for IEW systems.
Interoperability and integration among battlefield IEW systems are essential and must be designed into the family of systems.
Wherever possible, we will employ the same type of platforms for IEW systems as used by the supported command.
We will acquire a common "open systems architecture" for installation in the IEW platforms.
Ada will be the preferred software language and software will be designed in modular fashion to facilitate evolution, reusability and portability among IEW systems.
As this technology evolves, we would expect to obtain commercial variations of the boards that can be plugged into a standard chassis in an IEW system to evaluate performance.
All who are involved with the effort recognize that an IEW weapons system is far more than the processor-based components and that implementing the open systems architecture won't happen merely because the VMEbus was designated as a common backplane.
It will also facilitate keeping pace with the threat through technology insertion in the family of IEW systems using modules.
