Of these schooling fish, a number of anadromous smelt species (Family Osmeridae) and Pacific herring, Clupea pallasii pallasii, occur in Cook Inlet.
The decline in use of the Round Island haulout in the early 1980's was coincident with the development of the Togiak Pacific herring, Clupea pallasii, fishery and increased aircraft traffic bringing visitors to Round Island (NPFMC, 1989).
Second, especially strong mixing may be expected near fingers, and this may explain Jacobson's observation that "blue herring" (Pacific herring Clupea pallasii pallasii) are especially abundant in this area, where they apparently aggregate to spawn (Fisheries and Oceans Canada, 2007).
