One of my favourites, Chimonanthus
praecox, is equally seductive, and this garden will host some of the first snowdrops of the New Year.
Ask at your local garden centre for one of the following - Chaenomeles japonica, chimonanthus
praecox, cornus mas, erica carnea, garrya elliptica, hamamelis mollis, helleborus hybrida, jasminum nudiflorum, lonicera 'Winter Beauty', mahonia spps, prunus subhirtella 'Autumnalis', rhododendron praecox, sarcococca spps, viburnum farreri and V.
WINTER Sweet or Chimonanthus
grandiflorus will produce alluring frost-proof yellow blooms streaked with red blotches and exotic spicy scent on even the darkest days.
A My favourites are chimonanthus
(Winter Sweet) with yellow spicy scented flowers or sarcococca (Christmas Box) with strongly perfumed white flowers.
fragrans, the Chinese winter sweet, has pale, waxy-yellow bell flowers that are stained a darker purple shade at the centre and appear on the bare stems during winter.
Here are also to be found goodly specimens of Camellias, Gardenias, Rhododendrons, Weigelas, both plain and variegated leaved; Jacaranda mimosifolia, Hippeastrums, Magnolia fuscata, White everlasting Peas, Mahonia Leschenaultii, Chimonanthus
fragrans, Liriodendron tulipifera, or, tulip tree; Ligustrums, the pretty Acmena pendula, Camphors, Guilder rose, Liliums, and even the Eucharis amazonica, planted in the open ground, and to all appearances thriving well, apropo of this plant, Mr Saunderson stated that he had flowered it some eight or nine years since at Sir William Macarthur's at Camden.

In the warmer, more sheltered parts of Scotland you can find Chimonanthus
praecox (Wintersweet) being grown against walls.
praecox (Wintersweet) A strong, vigorous, upright shrub producing small pale yellow tinged purple flowers along bare branches, from mid-winter to spring.

Several deciduous shrubs to investigate are Chimonanthus
praecox, Allegheny viburnum, hedge maple, common witchhazel and arrowwood viburnum,.
Ideal plants for both colour and fragrance are winter sweet or Chimonanthus
Luteus (pictured), which has fragrant yellow flowers on bare winter stems, witch hazel and especially the variety Pallida whose spidery yellow flowers have the scent of sweet tea, all the mahonias with their yellow flowers and strong fragrance, and Viburnum Dawn, which although lightly scented is wor th investing in for its gorgeous pink blooms.
