Rowers from Newcastle and Durham Universities' boat clubs are gearing up for their annual clash of oars on the Tyne this weekend.
Durham University Boat Club is already riding high after winning the British Universities Rowing Championship.
But the harbour authority has offered a reduced rate for members of the main boat clubs which will see them pay around pounds 40 for the next 10 years and pounds 80 for the following 10 years before they pay the full price.
But Brian and his friends do not qualify for a discount, as they are not members of any boat clubs.
Warwick Boat Club, which organised the event, received 100 entries from 12 junior boat clubs to take part in the 500-metre course.
Warwick Boat Club won overall but it handed over to Stratford, because the host is not allowed to accept first place.
The discounted charges, which are this week being outlined to the Cardiff boat clubs
, will mean the average payment of pounds 800 will be cut to pounds 40 per year for the next 10 years.
Most of the exhibitors are members of model boat clubs, but there are some trade stands.
Model boat clubs from Daventry and Kingsbury in north Warwickshire will also be represented.
